About this calculator
An nth root calculator finds the number that, raised to the power n, gives your value. The square root uses n = 2 and the cube root n = 3. For odd roots of negative numbers the real result is negative; even roots of negatives are not real. The root is computed as value^(1/n).
Frequently asked questions
How do you find the nth root of a number?
Raise the number to the power 1/n. The cube root of 27 is 27^(1/3) = 3, because 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.
Can you take an even root of a negative number?
Not within the real numbers — there is no real square root of −4. Odd roots of negatives are fine: the cube root of −8 is −2.
