A volume converter changes a capacity between metric units (milliliter, liter, cubic meter), US customary cooking and liquid measures (teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon), the UK gallon, and cubic inches and feet. Everything converts through the liter as a common base.
The relationship that trips people up is the two gallons: the US gallon is 3.785411784 liters while the UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters, about 20% larger. The US cup, tablespoon and teaspoon used here are 236.6 ml, 14.79 ml and 4.93 ml respectively.
Worked example: to convert 2 US gallons to liters, multiply by 3.78541, giving about 7.57 liters. To find how many US cups are in a liter, divide 1,000 ml by 236.6, giving about 4.23 cups. A results table lists the same capacity in every unit at once, so you can move between a European recipe in milliliters and a US one in cups without a second step.
